Twitter eases 140-character limit in replies

Twitter has found more creative ways to ease its 140-character limit without officially raising it.

Now, the company says that when you reply to someone — or to a group — usernames will no longer count toward those 140 characters. This will be especially helpful with group conversations, where replying to two, three or more users at a time could be especially difficult with the character constraints.

When users reply, the names of the people they are replying to will be on top of the text of the actual tweet, rather than a part of it.

Last year, Twitter said it would stop counting photos, videos, quote tweets, polls and GIF animations toward the character limit. Twitter also said it would stop counting usernames, but the change did not go into effect until now.

Twitter, which has been struggling to attract new users, has been trying to appeal to both proponents and opponents by sticking to the current limit while allowing more freedom to express thoughts, or rants, through images and other media.

Twitter’s character limit was created so that tweets could fit into a single text message, back in the heyday of SMS messaging. But now, most people use Twitter through its mobile app. There isn’t the same technical constraint, just a desire on Twitter’s part to stay true to its roots.

Of course, there are ways to get around the limit , such as sending out multi-part tweets, or taking screenshots of text typed elsewhere.

Teens wearing leggings barred from United Airlines flight

Two teenage girls were barred by a gate agent from boarding a United Airlines flight from Denver to Minneapolis on Sunday because they were wearing leggings, according to a spokesman for the airline.

The girls, whose ages were not specified, were not allowed onto the morning flight because they were traveling under an employee travel pass that includes a dress code, United spokesman Jonathan Guerin said.

The dress code bars pass travelers from wearing spandex or Lycra pants such as leggings. The teenagers agreed to change their clothing and take a later flight, Guerin said, but the airline’s actions sparked a quick backlash on Twitter.

Activist Shannon Watts of Denver tweeted that she witnessed Sunday’s events and questioned United’s decision to police women’s clothing.

Watts said the girl’s father was allowed to board while wearing shorts and called the airline’s policy sexist.

Regularly ticketed passengers are not subject to the same dress code and can wear leggings, Guerin said. But the airline was standing by its policy for pass travelers because they are essentially representing the company, he said.

“We would ask the same of pass riders who were wearing flip-flops or who were wearing clothing that revealed their undergarments or torn, tattered jeans,” Guerin said.

Headlines over Amal Clooney ‘baby bump’ earn backlash

Human rights lawyer Amal Clooney, who represents victims of rape and kidnappings by members of the Islamic State group, urged a United Nations meeting to step up the pressure on the extremists, so why did her yellow dress and her “baby bump” also make headlines?

Criticism was swift Thursday for some news and entertainment outlets from outraged social media users, including some on Twitter who responded to the Time Inc. tweet: “Amal Clooney shows off her baby bump at the United Nations.”

The tweet linked to a story that ran on Time’s Motto website, which is focused on younger women. The story’s headline also referenced a “baby bump” but was changed, a spokeswoman for Time confirmed Friday. She declined further comment.

The Mirror in London went with: “Amal Clooney is a vision in yellow as she shows off hint of baby bump in chic dress,” while E! News ran: “Amal Clooney Shows Baby Bump in What Could Be the Ultimate International Women’s Day Poster,” all according to a story in the Washington Post questioning the approach in context to her speech.

Among the critics was Scotland’s first minister, Nicola Sturgeon, who has slammed media in the past for focusing on her “childless” status. In response to the Clooney bump tweet, Sturgeon wrote: “I’m pretty certain that this wasn’t the purpose of this impressive human rights lawyer’s appearance at the UN.”

Clooney became an international celebrity after her union with Oscar-winner George Clooney. They married in 2014 and are now expecting twins.

At the U.N., she urged Iraq and the world not to let the Islamic State “get away with genocide.” She expressed frustration that nothing has happened since she came to the U.N. six months ago seeking accountability for IS victims.

Amal Clooney represents Nadia Murad, a Yazidi woman captured by IS in Iraq in 2014. Murad has spoken out since her release about being raped and sold as a sex slave and is now a U.N. goodwill ambassador. Murad accompanied her to the U.N. and told the meeting that victims have been waiting more than a year for an investigation of IS to start.

Popular YouTubers can now stream live from cell phones

In a move against Facebook’s streaming service Facebook Live, YouTube has rolled out the ability to live-stream from mobile devices for creators with 10,000 or more subscribers.

In a blog post, the company stated that the service would be easily accessible from the YouTube app, adding that its features had been tested by “hundreds of creators to refine the mobile streaming experience”. Based on their feedback, live chats were slowed and streaming quality was boosted.

The feature will also allow creators to monetize their live streams, starting with Super Chat. This would allow viewers and fans to highlight and pin their messages in live chats for a fee, with the hope that it would catch creators’ attention. “Super Chat is like paying for that front-row seat in the digital age,” YouTube said.

YouTube has supported live streaming since 2011 and hosted the most watched political live-streams of all time, the 2016 US presidential debates. But the site had previously not supported mobile streams, unlike Facebook’s Facebook Live and Twitter’s Periscope, as reported by Reuters

According to YouTube, the live streams will share the same features as YouTube’s regular videos. “They can be searched for, found via recommendations or playlists, and protected from unauthorized use.” (sul/kes)

People who have not paid will drop down to the bottom of the tree and will not be paid any commissions. From then on we will run a similar system monthly for all of 2017 and see how it works out.

Our various features in the site are being gradually updated and improved. Please do not even expect very much to work perfectly yet. We are still very much building an extremely clever website. It is not for the faint hearted believe me. We are hiring our first ever designer and user interface specialist and some new programmers and social media support and help desk people.
